Survey shows organisations embrace green IT and sustainability [News]

When it comes to top initiatives that will benefit an organisation, green IT and sustainability came in second for 2011.

This is according to a C-suite barometer survey of over 1,000 companies in the region by research house IDC.

The IDC 2011 C-Suite barometer survey showed that organisations are becoming more and more aware of the benefits of green IT and sustainability.

It heard from industry executives in the region. 60 per cent of the respondents have C-level titles. There was a total of 99 respondents in Singapore.

Analysts said they were surprised that such initiatives took such a high ranking while others have been positioning their business model to tap on to this trend. Read more

NTU could test new type of solar cells in China [News]

The Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is exploring the possibility of testbedding a new type of solar cells with Singbridge in Guangzhou Knowledge City in China.

NTU Deputy President and Provost, Professor Freddy Boey, told MediaCorp that NTU also has an offer in China to testbed a new system of dye-sensitised solar cell, at the launch of the S$3 million Centre for Nanostructured Photosystems yesterday.

Also known as Graetzel cells after its Swiss inventor Professor Michael Graetzel – who will be leading the new centre – the solar cell mimics the ability of plants to capture photons of light and turn them into electricity. Graetzel cells use special dyes to capture the energy in light at different wavelengths, like the chlorophyll in plants. Read more

Tesla sports car returns to electrify roads [News]

MOTORISTS here who want to draw envious stares while feeling environmentally friendly will soon be able to get behind the wheel of the world’s first electric sports car.

The Tesla Roadster is being imported by a local firm after its American maker closed its Singapore office without clinching any sales.

Prices will start at about $520,000, including a Category B certificate of entitlement.

The 288-horsepower two-seater can go from 0-100kmh in four seconds, hit a top speed of 201kmh, and has a range of 500km in optimal driving conditions.

The firm, FSG Mobility Concepts, claims there will be a strong demand from luxury goods buyers keen to make a fashion statement while displaying their green credentials. Read more

Singapore Green Building Council Receives US$100,000 Grant from IBM to Help Build a Smarter Planet [Press Releases]

Singapore, 21 July 2011 – The Singapore Green Building Council (SGBC) today was awarded a grant of US$100,000 from IBM to help build a smarter planet by collaborating with the Ministry of Education (MOE) to seed the catalyst for the advancement of the smarter buildings agenda in Singapore. The grant – known as an IBM Centennial Grant – is part of the company’s Centennial Celebration of Service, dedicated to helping communities work better, as it marks its 100th year anniversary.

In this collaboration titled ‘Project Green Insights,’ SGBC will work with MOE to raise awareness of energy efficiency with schools in Singapore. SGBC will also leverage on IBM’s smarter building expertise and technologies to develop a system that will track power usage, and reduce energy and maintenance costs across 20 selected schools in Singapore.
