Date: Tuesday, 6 September 2011
Time: 5.15 p.m. – 6.30 p.m.

Venue: Seminar Room 3-1, Level 3, Manasseh Meyer, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

Speaker: Prof. Rolf Wuestenhagen, Good Energies Professor for Management of Renewable Energies; Director of the Institute for Economy and the Environment, University of St. Gallen (Switzerland)

Synopsis: Climate change is increasingly recognized as a major global challenge. Therefore, an increasing number of universities and business schools are considering ways to include climate change in the curriculum. An innovative example of teaching climate change is the CEMS-MIM* climate strategy course and role play, which has been developed by the University of St. Gallen with support from the Swiss Federal Office of the Environment and taught three times with up to three CEMS partner universities.

Given the complexity of global climate change and the challenges in coming up with adequate policy and business responses, the topic lends itself particularly well to intense learning experiences. To impart such learning, we developed a multi-school negotiation simulation that is unique in its intensiveness, cross-sector design (involving both business and public policy students), and transdisciplinary nature.

This talk explains the objectives of the course, explains the choice of a role-play format, describes the curriculum, and evaluates the results of its teachings. Evaluation is based on the extent to which the course met its objectives, how individual elements contributed to overall learning, and the overlap between this curriculum and established precepts of good sustainability teaching.

Date: Wednesday, 24 August 2011
Time: 5.30 p.m. – 7.00 p.m.

Venue: 11 Slim Barracks Rise, NTU@one-north campus, Level 3, Auditorium 302, Singapore 138664

Speaker: Prof. Rolf Wuestenhagen, Good Energies Professor for Management or Renewable Energies, Director of the Institute for Economy and the Environment University of St. Gallen (Switzerland)

Synopsis: After the March 2011 nuclear accident in Fukushima, a number of European countries have revised their nuclear policies. The German government has revised a previous decision to extend the lifetime of existing nuclear power plants, and then agreed with an overwhelming majority of the federal parliament on a 10-year phase-out plan by 2022.

Similarly, the Swiss government has shelved plans for up to three new nuclear power plants and took a decision to phase out nuclear at the end of the lifetime of the existing reactors (between 2020 and 2035). In Italy, the government’s plans to build four new reactors were rejected in a referendum by 94 % of the population.

In all three countries, public acceptance of nuclear power had sharply dropped in the wake of the Japanese nuclear crisis. However, it was the combination of this short-term reaction with longer-term trends in the energy industry that facilitated substantial shifts in recent European energy policies, notably the countervailing cost trends in nuclear versus renewable energy technologies and an increasing awareness of the competitive opportunities in growing cleantech industries.

The presentation will provide an account of Post-Fukushima policy changes in key European countries and explore the current and future opportunities to replace nuclear power by a combination of renewable energy and energy efficiency in Europe.

Singapore Standard ISO 50001 on Energy Management Systems – Requirements with Guidance for Use

Date: 4 August 2011, Thursday, 1.30pm – 5.00pm

Venue: SPRING Auditorium, Podium Block Level 3, 2 Bukit Merah Central, Singapore 159835

Introduction

More organisations around the world are becoming environment conscious in view of increasing costs of energy and climate change. One key area that is gaining growing global attention is energy management, a key to reduce energy consumption and improving energy performance in organisations.

The new Singapore Standard ISO 50001 on Energy Management Systems – Requirements with Guidance for Use will provide public and private sector organisations with management strategies to increase energy efficiency, reduce costs and improve energy performance in organisations. It is estimated to have a positive impact on up to 60% of world’s energy demand.

The new standard will provide a plan-do-check-act framework for industrial plants, commercial facilities or entire organisations to manage energy. This standard specifies applicable requirements to energy use and consumption, including measurement, documentation, reporting and design & monitoring for equipment, processes & systems that contribute to energy performance.

Organisations will be required to develop an energy policy for more efficient use of energy and develop targets & objectives to meet the energy policy, establish action plans & measure the results of the action plans and review the effectiveness of the policy to achieve continual improvement of energy management.

This standard is applicable to any organisation of any size, business activity and industry. It has been designed to be implemented independently, but it can be integrated with other existing management system standards.

This seminar aims to enhance the understanding of SS ISO 50001 amongst users and assist organisations in the implementation of this new standard through constructive cross sharing & learning of the development process of the standard, and industry implementation case studies.

Who Should Attend

Senior management, directors and managers

Industry professionals and engineers from the environment and energy sector

Professionals involved in quality management systems

Speaker: Prof. Matthias Ruth, Roy F. Weston Chair in Natural Economics, School of Public Policy, University of Maryland

Date: Wednesday, 10 August 2011

Time: 12.15 p.m. – 1.30 p.m.

Venue: Seminar Room 3-5, Level 3, Manasseh Meyer, Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, 469C Bukit Timah Road, Singapore 259772

Synopsis: The rising threat from climate change is one of many factors to be considered in investment and policy making. In many instances, climate impacts magnify existing needs of businesses and local populations, and function as multipliers on their vulnerabilities. Nowhere are such impacts of climate change more noticeable, and faster growing, than in urban areas, given their density of people, infrastructures and economic activity. This presentation illustrates on the basis of several case studies the need for urban climate adaptation and identifies a set of local to global investment and policy strategies to reduce vulnerabilities.

Date: Friday, 18 March 2011

Time: 9:00am to 6:00pm

Venue: Ballroom 3, Orchard Hotel Singapore, 442 Orchard Road, Singapore 238879

About the conference:

The Energy Studies Institute (ESI) at the National University of Singapore is organising a conference on “Policy Responses to Climate Change and Energy Security Post-Cancun: Implications for the Asia-Pacific Region’s Energy Security”. This conference is a sequel to the conference held in July 2010, which examined policy responses post-Copenhagen.

Following the disappointing outcome of COP15 in 2009, many observers were not particularly sanguine about the results of COP16. However, it seems that some small positive steps were made at the latest gathering in Cancun and all the concerned parties, particularly governments, must continue to play their part in monitoring and lowering their greenhouse gas emissions while pursuing their energy security objectives.

The post-Cancun conference will involve participants from various companies, government offices and academic institutions and will specifically focus on the world’s largest energy consumer, the Asia-Pacific Region. There will be presentations from Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, China, India, Japan, South Korea, Australia and Singapore.

To register, please send your name, organization and email address via the ESI website. For enquiries, please contact Ms. Jan Lui at 65162000.

Date and Time: Thursday, 3 March 2011 (3pm to 4.45pm)

Speaker: General (Ret.) Paul Kern, Jr., Senior Counsellor, Cohen Group, Washington DC

Venue: Vista @ Level 7, Lee Kong Chian Wing, 21 Lower Kent Ridge, Singapore 119077

The issue of climate change has been studied and debated internationally for many years. Scientists have generally concluded that it is both real and a significant contributor has been man-made greenhouse gases. Politically, the debate is not settled in the US and a carbon tax to incentives reduction of CO2 during tough economic times is not viewed favourably. The US Department of Defense has tried to stay out of the debate on causes but has devoted considerable effort analyzing the consequences and what if anything should be done by the military to be prepared. One conclusion is that climate change is often linked to instability and the connectivity of climate change, energy, and water should receive more attention as factors in national security.

This event is jointly sponsored by ESI and RSIS and will be limited to the first 80 participants signing up. Please email your name, organisation and email address to Ms Jan Lui at esilyyj@nus.edu.sg by 25th February 2011.

Venue: Shanghai, China

Smart grid technology really takes off in Asia in 2010 as a number of governments have launched initiatives to develop the technology and infrastructure needed to upgrade their antiquated electrical grid systems.

However, drivers and roadmaps behind those initiatives are quite diversified. China, India and Russia etc are pursuing a sound, secure and energy-efficient electrical T&D networks to meet the surging electricity demand of tommorrow, while Japan, South Korea and Australia etc are investing in IT and demand side to make electricity networks smarter, greener and customer-centric.

How to align their efforts in line for future cross-boarder cooperation? ?How to differentiate your market entry strategy to fit into each individual market in Asia? How to maximize your ROI while striving to be a trend setter?

SMARTricity Asia Congress is a high-level strategic platform for Asian governments, power generators, operator, utilities and distribution companies to address most critical issues in adopting smart technologies to achieve energy T&D efficiency and reliability in Asia.
